One Forty

It has been an incredible and wild first 24 hours into my fundraising for the RSPCA. Yesterday, when I opened my fundraising page to accept donations, I initially set a goal to raise $500. Those of you who have already donated in sponsor of me have been so amazing with your contributions that I have already currently raised $451 which means I am only $49 away from meeting that initial $500 goal!

But I’m not going to stop there. In response to your support, I have now increased my challenge and set my new goal to raise $1,000! Thank you so much for your donations and support. Keep up the amazing effort, guys – you are AWESOME!

I adopted my Kelpie cross Staghound, Saxon, just over one year ago from the Yagoona RSPCA shelter. He is now a healthy 15-month-old who is full of life, love and is a constant source of laughs and fun in my life. I cannot imagine life without him.

This year on May 20, 2012, I will be walking 4.6km with my dog Saxon to raise funds and show support for the RSPCA and animals in need everywhere. This will be Saxon’s first time participating in the RSPCA Million Paws Walk and we are super excited! I have a passion for animals, responsible pet ownership and animal welfare. When I’m not working at my day job during the week, I am spending my weekend working at the Rouse Hill RSPCA Care Centre.

I have set a goal to raise at least $500 in funds for the RSPCA but I am hoping that, with your help and support, I can totally SMASH that $500 goal! I’d really appreciate it if you could share this as far and wide as you can, donate some money and get as many people as you can to also donate to my fundraising page.

The money raised will be helping the RSPCA care for the thousands of animals received each year – provide them with the medical care, love, food, support and shelter they need and deserve. It will also help every animal great and small find their fur-ever home. It will speak volumes about how we should look to adopt shelter animals before we consider impulse buying from a pet store or puppy mill.

Update – October 22, 2011: Meg has found a loving family who have adopted her as part of their family pack! 

Meet Meg – she has been waiting at the NSW RSPCA since November 2010 for an opportunity to go to her furever home and she is really ready to have a life with a loving family.

Meg arrived at the NSW RSPCA with an injury resulting from being hit by a car and had to have her front leg amputated. Don’t let this sad start to her life fool you; Meg is a very happy and playful girl who doesn’t even seem to notice that she’s missing a leg – she goes on with her life doing everything any other dog would do without any difficulties.

After the surgery, Meg spent some time in foster care to recover and that meant having to share a house with 3 cats and a large breed dog and she loved it! Meg definitely works to allow other cats and dogs be her friend but she will need to meet any dogs that she will be living with prior to adoption.

Meg is a very active girl and needs to be taken for walks to help use up all of her energy – ultimately, she would love to have a family who will include her in lots of activities. She understands basic commands such as “sit” and “stay” but will need ongoing training to help further improve her manners and build her trick repertoire!

Don’t worry, Meg also loves nothing more than cuddling up with people after a long day and is very affectionate and cuddly. Meg loves to play with kids of all ages but she can sometimes get a bit too excited and bouncy with happiness, so it’s important that you bring your children along prior to adoption to meet her. She would love to go home to a loving family with kind, playful kids who can keep up with her energy levels.

Meg requires a fully fenced yard with a minimum height of 6ft that does not have any gaps, holes or weak points where a dog might be able to squeeze through. She is suitable for an ‘orange profile‘ family.

Adopt cost includes: Desexing, microchip, vaccinations, flea and worm control, vet check, 30 day pet insurance and a grrrreat companion.

With the beginning of spring means warmer weather is on the way which also means dog and cat breeding season will soon commence across the country. This increase in animal breeding means a potential inundation of unwanted litters will arrive on the door steps of animal shelters such as the Animal Welfare League NSW (AWL), the Royal Society and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), council pounds and many others.

In an effort to combat this and in effort to help reduce euthanasia of unwanted cats and dogs, AWL is holding an adoption drive called ”Save a Life in September” with the aim to re-home 200 puppies, dogs, kittens and cats in 30 days!

All animals in the care of AWL that are available for adoption are tested for their temperament so the team can carefully match the animal with the lifestyle of the most suitable owner. This is something that organisations such as the RSPCA also provide as part of their adoption process. In addition, all puppies, dogs, kittens and cats are vet checked, desexed, microchipped (including lifetime registration), vaccinated, wormed and are on flea prevention treatments. Most importantly, they match pets with owners who are dedicated and willing to provide the necessary and required lifetime care and who will provide a safe and loving furever home.

Update: Zoidberg has since found his furever home!

This is Zoidberg, he has been at the shelter since January 2011 looking for his forever home, but due to his condition he has been over looked.

Zoidberg is a very special boy who has mild brain damage – this causes his head to bob uncontrollably and he also walks in circles. Sometimes Zoidy can come across as deaf, but its mostly just confusion.

Zoidy cannot go to a home with young children as he can be a bit skittish if he is startled.

Zoidberg absolutely adores other animals and MUST go to a home with another friendly cat or a calm friendly dog, because when he doesnt have a companion Zoidy can get quite distressed.

Due to his condition Zoidy can NEVER be let outside and must be an indoor only cat for his whole life. Zoidberg will need a patient calm family who will love him for his quirky ways.

Zoidy enjoys the occasional cuddle but isnt one to sit on your lap and have a sleep, he is more than happy to play with toys and do his own thing. In his new home Zoidberg will need a warm bed, scratching post, litter tray, toys, and someone to love him just the way he is.

Zoidberg is $190 to adopt which includes: Desexing, Microchip, Vaccinations, Flea and Worm Control, Vet Check, Pet Insurance and a purrrfect companion.
